Although we generally bring all three of the Inland Empire Wings aircraft to the air shows we attend, Wings Over Gillespie is a bit special as our D-Day Doll is somewhat the centerpiece of the ground display and a major part of the air display, as she is used as the jump aircraft for the D-Day invasion reenactment, making this a very special show for me to be a part of.

Wings over Gillespie 2010

Air Group One, of the Commemorative Air Force, hosts Wings Over Gillespie each year. Gillespie Air Field is located in El Cajon, California and is the host air field. Wings Over Gillespie is a three day event, with Friday open to students of San Diego County to learn a little bit about aviation and aviation history. The following two days are filled with aircraft demonstrations and other aviation and military historic related activities. With about 40 aircraft, both static and flying, the Inland Empire Wing’s C-53 is the centerpiece of the tarmac. Rightly named the D-day Doll, the IEW’s C-53 provides a jump platform for the D-Day invasion reenactment jumpers and is one of the many aircraft that actually participated in the D-Day invasion.

After the air show Colonel Andy Conley let me fly backseat in the Piper L-4 Grasshopper and even let me take the stick for part of the flight home. These are a couple of picture I took, one before take off and the other flying over a lake someplace in San Diego, California
